College and University: Class of ‘09
Graduates of the British School of Washington were able to congratulate themselves this year as all succeeded in obtaining places at their college or university of choice.
This was also the first year (but definitely not the last) in which a student succeeded in obtaining a place at Oxford University. Lauri Saksa (with a remarkable 41 points on his IB Diploma) was accepted into St. Hugh’s College Oxford to read Archaeology and Anthropology. He comfortably exceeded the number of IB points (39) they required for entry.
Of those applying to universities in the United Kingdom virtually all received offers from all their five choices, and all were able to go to their first choice which included St Andrew’s and University of Wales Institute Cardiff.
Of those going to American Colleges, all succeeded in being accepted for a wide range of colleges and those finally being attended included such institutions as Savannah College of Art and Design, American University, University of Oregon and McGill University (Canada). Another first was Jackie Macedo, who was accepted at Muhlenberg under the ‘ early decision’ option where the colleges need to be assured of the academic success of the entrants.
