Year 5 making the news

As part of their International Primary Curriculum topic on "Making the News", members of Year 5 York class and Year 5 Chicago class visited the BBC Washington Bureau. The students met some famous BBC journalists to get some tips before recording a short interview in the radio studio and practicing reading from the autocue in the TV studio. Several pupils showed off their skills by translating directly from the autocue into their home languages, whilst still retaining a fixed look at the camera. The 'green screen' proved a particular favourite as students learned how to change the pictures behind a news presenter without them even moving.

This trip greatly helped the students understand the way the news is made and will feed directly into their upcoming work making their own news show. This unit of work will culminate in two weeks time with a trip to the Newseum in downtown Washington.
