About the British Schools of America
At the British Schools of America we provide a broad, balanced education for all the children in our school community. We aim to create a happy, caring and stimulating learning environment in which all children can grow academically, develop self-esteem and fulfill their potential as human beings.
In striving for excellence in education we aim to:
- Enable children to reach their full potential in all aspects of the school's curriculum
- Provide children with an education appropriate to the world in which they live
- Develop in children a love of learning and a desire to expand their knowledge and skills throughout their life
- Foster an atmosphere of mutual respect wherein children learn to live together in a community and recognize other's strengths
- Encourage children to become responsible, independent people with a sense of moral responsibility and self-discipline
Mission Statement
The British Schools of America provide high quality education in a structured, positive and caring environment, which meets the individual needs of pupils. The school community draws strength from its British identity and its American home. We welcome all nationalities, engendering respect for all cultures and a sense of discipline is naturally achieved. The British Schools of America offer a challenging, broad curriculum based on the National Curriculum (England) and focuses on the whole development of the child, aiming to equip every pupil with the essential skills for lifelong learning.
Schools
The British Schools of America were founded in 1998, when the first school opened in Washington D.C. The British Schools of Boston and Houston both opened in September 2000, the British School of Chicago opened in September 2001 and the British American School of Charlotte, our fifth school, opened in September 2004. It is anticipated during the next few years that the total number of British Schools of America will grow to 20, all located in major cities across the USA.
The British Schools of America are a division of World Class Learning Schools and Systems (WCLS), based in London. The Executive team of WCLS is Dennis Hallahane, Chief Executive Officer, Martin Skelton, Head of Learning, Charlie Freer, Finance Director and newly appointed Chief Operating Officer, Marina Major. WCLS also operates Oversesas Schools, Limited and Fieldwork Education, Limited, which includes the rapidly growing International Primary Curriculum.
Teachers
"A teacher affects eternity; he can never tell where his influence stops."
- Henry B. Adams
Our teachers, male and female, recruited directly from the UK or other international schools, are of the highest caliber. Every teacher is trained in the delivery of the National Curriculum (England) and to teach the full range of core and foundation subjects for primary level (3-11 years old). Our secondary specialists (11 -16) cover all subject areas across Key Stage 3, Key Stage 4 (GCSE) and then on to IB level from 16 to 18.
All our teachers at the British Schools of America take part in a continuous programme of In Service Training (INSET) and are drawn from the British Independent, British State and International Independent sectors. Teaching in the U.S. is an attractive prospect, not open to many British teachers, thus providing British Schools of America with a unique opportunity to select from an extensive source of professional teachers. This has enabled British Schools of America to be highly selective in offering teaching positions to the most experienced, highly qualified and committed of teachers.
