Memories of Madrid 2006

During the first week of the Summer Term, 12 students from years 8, 9, and 10 went to Madrid, the capital of Spain. We spent our first full day in Segovia, a beautiful town 100km from Madrid with a Roman aqueduct and an Arabian Palace.

Around Madrid, we visited Puerta del Sol, the very heart of the city, the Plaza Mayor, and El Palacio Real - the palace still used by today's royal family, consisting of 2800 rooms - of which we got to see 20! El Museo del Prado, which was close to our hotel, is a museum dedicated to Renaissance art by the likes of Goya, El Greco and Velasquez. A bit more to our liking was the Reina Sofia - the museum of modern art which includes Picasso's famous 'Guernica', the painting based on the bombing of the Spanish town of the same name.

We got to meet our penpals in the International School of Madrid, and the same night they also came to dinner with us. On our final day, we went to “Parque de Atracciones” - Madrid's theme park - with some of our penpals. We got four hours of sleep that night before getting up at three to go home! We loved the trip, it was definitely a new experience for us, and we also learned lots of Spanish!
