The aims of the course are to encourage a personal appreciation of literature and to develop an understanding of the techniques involved in literary criticism, to develop students' powers of expression, to introduce a range of literary works of different periods, genres and styles and, in so doing, to promote a lifelong enjoyment of and interest in literature.

Assessment of the course is through a combination of final examinations, written and oral assignments.
