INdividuals and Societies
HISTORY OF EUROPE
The study of History has particular relevance in the world today, especially in its international perspective.
Through an understanding of different religions, economies, technologies, cultures and societies in the past, students can begin to appreciate different perspectives in the present.
The subject aims to develop in students’ an understanding and appreciation of the historical process, identifying and explaining different interpretations of the past and the attitudes upon which they are based.
They will form an understanding of how historical judgements are based on the evidence available to historians and how those perceptions may change over time and in the light of new research and subsequent events.
The IB History of Europe course will further develop the students’ skills as historians, a process started lower down the school. These skills include the ability to handle a wide variety of historical sources and to draw conclusions about the nature of that evidence to explain the reasons for different perspectives of the same event.
They will already have confidence in handling source material to assess issues of reliability and utility and be able to reach conclusions regarding the nature, origin and purpose of historical evidence.
They will be able to use their background knowledge with appropriate examples of primary and secondary sources in order to write extended answers under examination conditions and in internal assessments.
GEOGRAPHY
The study of individuals and societies in this context will focus on understanding the world is as it is today and how the decisions people make will change it for the future.
The IB Geography course will allow students to develop geographical knowledge and understanding using specific case studies from different world locations and correct geographical terminology.
Students will learn to recognise, describe and explain geographical patterns, processes and interactions at a range of scales. Their studies will lead them to use these to make decisions about management strategies for the future.
Throughout the course, students will implement a wide range of geographical skills and techniques in research and data presentation.
