BSH IB Group 6

The Arts

Visual Arts

The IB Visual Arts course is designed for those students who have serious interest in the subject of Art and Design and to some extent Design and Technology (Product Graphics). Both of these subjects are currently offered at GCSE level and it is hoped the IB will allow students to continue developing their artistic, creative, graphical, critical and design skills. This will be a major factor influencing the choice of topics, media, techniques and work covered during the course.

Students who choose to work at Higher Level and Standard Level – option A (SLA) - will be required to create a portfolio of work and display this work in an exhibition at the end of the two year programme, These students will also be required to clearly present their thought processes, working processes, inspirations and ideas in a “Research Workbook” (RWBs). This practice will be a continuation of the methods used by students who have attempted their GCSE in Art and Design.

Students who pursue Standard Level B (SLB) will explore the materials, methods and technologies used in art-making, as well as pursuing independent critical research and analysis of important artworks of various cultures and practitioners. SLB students will also be expected to record this research in RWBs.

Students pursuing Visual Arts will also be interviewed about their area of focus by an IB External Examiner towards the end of their 2 year course.

Theatre Arts

The aims of the Theatre Arts course are to help the students understand the concepts of the theatre, not purely through learning about theatre, but an understanding of what can be learned through drama. This involves the students' bodies and minds. It is about the social understanding of any play, the background and therefore the reason it was written, and also what a person may learn through the analysis of a play.

The students have to acquire an understanding of the links between social context and practical performance.

Having completed the course at Higher Level or Standard Level, a student will be able to demonstrate:

  • An understanding of the major themes in the theatrical history of more than one culture
  • Ability to interpret texts in terms of practical development
  • An understanding of stage art
  • An ability to perform
  • The attainment of technical skills in at least one of the theatrical arts,
  • Understanding of theatrical production
  • Ability to research originally and produce a portfolio

Physics (SL Only)

Physics is an essential subject for a variety of careers in science and engineering. It also provides a very useful basis for further study leading to an even wider variety of careers, such as law and accountancy.

The IB course aims to provide opportunities for study and creativity within a global context, which will stimulate and challenge students.

Some core topics are: measurement, mechanics, thermal physics and properties of matter, waves, electricity and magnetism, atomic and nuclear physics.

Most units of work will have at least one assessed piece of laboratory work which will examine some of the different areas of the Internal Assessment Criteria (IAC). This will be accompanied by pieces of work that assess the complete IAC. This will enable a development of manipulative skills involved in practical work as well as the different aspects of the scientific method.

Through a variety of teaching methods and experimentation, students will develop their understanding of scientific methods and knowledge and the ability to apply and utilize this learning in both a theoretical and practical sense.
