BSW IB Theory of Knowledge

Theory of Knowledge (TOK) is a compulsory element of the IB Diploma. The course is unique to the IB, and the recommendation is for at least 100 hours of classroom time spanning the programme's two years.

TOK is interdisciplinary and intended to stimulate critical reflection on the knowledge and experience gained inside and outside the classroom. The course challenges students to question the basis of knowledge and belief, to be aware of subjective and ideological biases and to develop the ability to analyse evidence that is expressed in rational argument. TOK is a key element in encouraging students to appreciate other cultural perspectives.

Moreover, by providing a thorough grounding in critical thought, TOK is essential groundwork for the successful completion of the Extended Essay (see page 23) as well as a great primer for subsequent university study. The result of the assessment of the Extended Essay is combined with the student's performance in the TOK course, and may result in up to 3 bonus Diploma points.
