BSW IB Creativity, Action, Service

CAS is one of the three components at the centre of the IB hexagon. It encourages students to be involved in creative pursuits, physical activities, and service projects in the local, national and international contexts. It takes seriously the importance of life outside the classroom, counterbalancing the academic rigour of the IB curriculum.

The Aims of CAS

  • to challenge the students to develop a value system by which they enhance their personal growth.
  • to develop a spirit of open-mindedness, lifelong learning, discovery and self reliance.
  • to encourage the development of creative, physical and social skills.
  • to inspire a sense of responsibility towards all members of the community.
  • to encourage the development of determination, commitment, initiative and empathy.
Requirements: Students should
  • complete a minimum of 150 hours of CAS activities, balanced between the three aspects and evenly distributed over the two years
  • spend much of their time working cooperatively with others
  • keep records of their activities and hours spent by means of a CAS portfolio/diary which includes evidence of planning, commitment and reflection. This will be the basis of a final piece of work, the CAS essay.
  • meet regularly with the CAS Coordinator to discuss their projects and their progress.

CAS is not a timetabled part of the school day. Although there will be advice and assistance available from the CAS Coordinator during regular school hours, CAS activities will take place after school, on the weekends and in holidays. A significant amount of commitment and determination is therefore needed on the part of the students to complete the requirements of this part of the IB programme.
