BSH IB Extended Essay
The Extended Essay is defined as an in-depth study of a limited topic within a subject.
Its purpose is to provide candidates with an opportunity to engage in independent research at an introductory level. Emphasis is placed on the process of engaging personal research, on the communication of ideas and information in a logical and coherent manner and on the overall presentation of the Extended Essay.
An Extended Essay is 4,000 words (minimum of 3,500).
The following provide some examples of Extended Essay titles submitted by IB students:
History: “The defeat of the USA in Vietnam can be blamed on a lack of clear political aims, insufficient communication with South Vietnamese counterparts and on a drug crazed, unmotivated and psychotic military.” Discuss.
Visual Arts: Louise Bourgeois: what are the biographical influences on the controversial imagery in her artwork?
English: Reality or Fiction? How far are the Western Democracies of the world of 2000 from the ‘Orwell-Society’?
The Extended Essay is a requirement of all International Baccalaureate students.
