BSB GCSE Art

Exam Board: EDEXCEL

The course involves having an adventurous approach to art and design and developing the skills to express it.  Students will develop an understanding of past and contemporary art and design and will be able to produce a personal response embracing a range of ideas.   The skills developed in this course will be varied: amongst them you will develop a working knowledge of materials, practices and technology of art and design.  Skills of investigation, analysis and experiment using art will be developed, as will imaginative powers and the skills to express ideas, feelings and meanings.  Students will also acquire an understanding of the language and conventions of art and design.  Specific skills developed will vary according to the area of study chosen: some students’ final pieces of work may be sculpture based.

The course follows on from what has been taught in Key Stage 3.  The emphasis now is on the process of developing both ideas and work.  Central to this is the work journal, similar to a sketchbook, which requires a dedicated approach, especially at home.  This will include research, supporting studies (photos) and work showing the development of ideas, leading to one or more outcomes, usually finished pieces of work.  Assignments and tasks will be set by the teacher.
