Registration
There are two ways to register:
Your application will be processed when the admissions office receives your completed registration form, accompanying paperwork and registration fee.
Evaluation Visit
After registration, prospective pupils are invited to visit the
school for a short visit. They will join their age appropriate class
for a half or full day, depending on their age. They will have the
opportunity to see whether or not they like the school, and the school
has the opportunity to see whether or not the pupil is able to access
the curriculum at a level in keeping with the children in the proposed
class. On occasion a second visit may be required. Children who are not
yet three, and are applying for our Nursery class may be offered a
place prior to a visit to the school. All new Nursery children are
invited to visit the school with their parents for a special Open House
held in the May or June prior to starting.
Following this visit the admissions staff will contact you. If the visit is successful, and there is space available, the child will be offered a place. If a place is not currently available the child will be placed on a waiting list until such time as a place becomes available. If we do not offer your child a place at the British School of Washington we will seek to provide a full and frank explanation of our reasons .On occasion it is not possible for a child re-locating from abroad to visit the school. In these circumstances the child may be offered a place on the basis of the school reports alone. As with all final admissions decisions, this is entirely at the discretion of the Head.
Enrollment
When your child is offered a place at the British School of
Washington you will be required to pay a $1000 deposit and to sign the
school agreement to hold the place. In signing the school agreement you
acknowledge your commitment to paying the full tuition for the first
academic year and the development levy when due, even in the unlikely
event that your circumstances change and your child does not attend the
school.
Once a child has been in school for one academic year, the
deposit is refundable on leaving, as long as we receive a full term's
notice of leaving in writing. For example, if a child will not be
returning to school for the autumn term, notice must be received before
the beginning of the summer term.
Arrival
The admissions office will send out a package of information prior to your child's arrival in school. This includes our school handbook, a pupil directory and a variety of forms to be completed. An Induction Day is held during the week before the start of the academic year. We invite all children, and their parents, to come and meet their new teacher and familiarise themselves with the school in general and their classroom in particular. The staff and existing pupils are keen to welcome our new families and help make your transition as smooth as possible. It is our experience that children generally settle into the school very quickly and easily. However, we encourage you to let us know if you have any questions or if there is anything more that we can do to help.
