Houston means:
Howdy, Hot, Humid, Huge, Hectic, High-rise, High Tech, Highbrow, Highways, Horrendous Traffic, HUMMERS, Hurricanes, Humongous Portions and Hyperbole: Everything is bigger in Texas!
Houston is all of these and more. As the fourth largest city in the USA it offers all the attractions of a sophisticated city with a distinctive Texan twist, and all on a huge scale! Let's be clear here, distances are deceiving and take longer during rush hour, which runs from 5.30am until 9pm!
Your choice of where to live will always be a compromise between work, school, and how your child will get to school. The British School has five bus routes from a number of different areas of Houston. Consequently, many parents choose to live in areas close to the bus stops.
Families who don't use the bus service often carpool with other families to minimize time spent in the car. Again, these families tend to cluster near the Energy Corridor. Remember that your children will have social lives too so weekend parties and after school activities will need to be factored in.
Check the Parent Room notice board for car shares or get in touch with Heather Holmes, the school's Communications Coordinator. Also, think about car sharing when buying a car... make sure you can accommodate additional children!
High Occupancy Vehicle lanes (HOV s) are accessible at certain times of the day, going with the prevailing traffic flow on major roadways. This can significantly reduce traveling time to and from school. HOV s can be used by cars carrying more than one person - check the rules before using as some require three in the car while others only need you to have two.
Housing comes in all sizes....large and extra large! Each area within Houston has a different character but each will be well serviced with playgroups, plumbers, doctors, dentists, shops and more shops. Ask your local Connections rep for any assistance to find what you need. If they don't know themselves, they will know someone who does.
