Deep Learning
How do I get beyond memorization as a tool to learning and encourage a more meaningful education experience?

We are in the middle of the 'learning revolution'. Learning has - at long last, some of us might say, overthrown teaching, resources and so much more to become the rightful central focus of what schools and classrooms are about.

World View
Neil Bolick, World View
What does international education mean?
World View is an International Program for Educators at the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill.

Assessment for Learning
Emma Haworth, British American School of Charlotte

Is there a gap between what you are teaching and what they are learning?

This is the process by which educators, on a day to day, hour to hour, minute to minute, assess the understanding of the learner, allowing rapid redirection of planning to meet the learner's need. .

Morning Breakout Sessions: Session 2
11:15am - 12:30pm

Service Learning
Deborah Bender & Kara Schoo, APPLES, UNC Chapel Hill

What types of experiences can I have in my life to expand my outlook and provide an example to my students?

Service learning is a teaching and learning strategy that integrates meaningful community service with instruction and reflection to enrich the communities. An overview and guidance on participating in service learning networks worldwide to encourage the professional development of educators.

Multiple Intelligences
Howard Gardner, Harvard University

Creating a Project Based Horizontally and Vertically Integrated Global Curriculum for the 21st Century Learner

Brett Haight, School of International Studies and Global Economics at Olympic

Students today face the immense challenge of competition in a worldwide market requiring a strong fundamental knowledge base, critical decision making skills and the creativity to apply both together. Schools must rethink the manner and methods that have been traditionally utilized as we engage the demands of the millennial marketplace.

Afternoon Breakout Session: Session 3
1:30pm-2:45pm

International Primary Curriculum
Theresa Forbes, International Primary Curriculum, Fieldwork Education

What types of curriculum choices exist that emphasize a global focus across all subjects?

An overview of the International Primary Curriculum that is influenced by two ideas. The key concepts of independence and interdependence which underpin our view of what it is to have an international mind-set and the lessons learnt as a result of a decade of research into the brain and the development of brain-friendly learning and teaching strategies.

Differentiated Learning
Jude Ross, British American School of Charlotte

How do you teach to 23 individual students all at different levels, but in the same classroom?

Can I motivate my high-achievers without losing students that need extra help?
Differentiated learning is the result of the educator recognizing that students have varying background knowledge, readiness, language, preferences in learning, interests, and reacting responsively in order to maximize each student's growth and individual success.

Foreign Language Debate
As we become a truly global society what language studies should we focus on for the 21st century?

Language studies today have many different focuses. How can you determine the language that will dominate business and academics in the future and give your students the leg up they will need in this highly competitive global economy. Or should we focus language study decisions on broadening our view of the world and our understanding of world cultures.
